Built Up and Modified Bitumen Roofing
Built-Up Roofing (BUR) has been in existence for over 150 years. The primary waterproofing agent of a built-up roof is hot asphalt (similar to the asphalt used to pave roads). BUR has been the most successful and time tested roof system in the industry to date. They are extremely easy to repair and maintain. However, due to constant rising petroleum costs over the past 10 years, BUR has taken a back seat to single ply systems.
Modified Bitumen (Mod Bit) typically comes in 36” x 35’ long rolls with either a smooth or a granular (similar to shingles) surface. Mod Bit can be installed as a 1 ply (layer) system carrying a manufacturer’s 10-12 year warranty. They have proven to be much more successful when installed as a 2 ply system. They can be torch-applied or set in hot asphalt or cold adhesive. Like the BUR systems, they have become less economical since they are a petroleum based product.
